Former ‘rookie of the year’ Christopher Cambray, 42, is currently suspended from his sergeant role with Warwickshire Police pending the outcome of the inquiry. The officer has been charged with 11 child sex offences, including possessing and making indecent images, sexual activity with a child and paying for the sexual services of a child.
The married dad first appeared before Birmingham magistrates on April 28. He is due to attend a plea and case management hearing at Birmingham Crown Court on August 20 when he will have an opportunity to enter a plea.
He was first arrested in December last year when officers searched his home.
Mr Cambray, who grew up and went to school in Whitnash, near Leamington Spa, works as a sergeant with Warwickshire Police.
He is currently suspended on full pay.
The officer, of Shrewley, Warwickshire, has been charged with 11 offences in total, including two counts of paying for the sexual services of a child, contrary to Section 47 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.
He is also charged with three counts of making indecent photographs a child, three counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of taking indecent photographs of a child, and one count of possession of indecent photos.
In 2002, Mr Cambray was voted best trainee officer of the year, out of 100 other students across Warwickshire.
The then community beat bobby for Whitnash was honoured as Probationer of the Year by then Warwickshire Police Chief Constable John Burbeck.
Speaking at the time, Inspector Paul Leddon said of the award-winning rookie cop: “He is a credit to Leamington police station and it shows the high esteem in which he is held.”
The then PC Cambray had said of his success: “I think working in an area I know quite well has helped me.”
He had worked at the station for 20 months when he picked up the award. In 2006, the then Acting Sergeant Cambray spoke out about a pilot scheme to encourage school children to dispose of fake ID cards.
He said at the time: “Young people throughout the country use fake IDs to buy alcohol or enter premises licensed for the over 18s.
“In Kenilworth we believe the consumption of alcohol that follows has led to an increase in anti-social behaviour in the town.
“He will also face an internal disciplinary process. We cannot speculate on the outcome of this at present.”
