Relatives of missing Townsville twin girls Isabella and Bronte Watter, 7, who have been missing for six weeks today, are hoping the children and their mother Cassie Watter are not found.
Speaking exclusively to the Brisbane Times, a maternal relative of the children who is not a party in a Family Court case, said that whilst the family is anxious that they have not heard from Mrs Watter and don’t know where she is, they are confident she is with the children and that the children are safe.
“I’m hoping that they’re safe somewhere,” she said.
“The mother has been, until recently the director of a paediatric health service. She is an approved foster carer and we hope she manages to keep the children hidden until the reason for their disappearance is re-investigated by police,” she said.
Police believe the girls disappeared on April 4 from Hermit Park Primary School in Townsville.
However Townsville police Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Miles said last night that police investigations have not yet revealed an independent sighting of the twins at the school that day and there is no confirmed sighting of either Cassie or Michael Watter at the school.
Police discovered Mrs Watter’s unlocked car in Townsville with her daughter’s school uniforms and school bags inside.
Sergeant Miles said it appeared Mrs Watter had help to disappear with the children.
“There is no suggestion of foul play at this time,” he said.
Sergeant Miles said police are continuing to investigate the disappearance of the children.
Adelaide-based child development academic Emeritus Professor Freda Briggs has been involved in the case for more than a year.
Professor Briggs said she believes Mrs Watter’s motive for disappearing with her children was understandable.
“People don’t leave their family, home, car, job, possessions and support network for no reason,” she said.
Publication of details of Family Court matters is restricted under section 121 of the Family Law Act 1975.
The Family Court released a media statement prepared by the father’s lawyers and photographs of the mother and children, a week after the children disappeared.
The statement says the children are non-identical twins, born on 4 January 2007.
Both girls have light brown hair and blue eyes and are 95 and 100cm tall.
The twins’ father has obtained television coverage and set up a Facebook page to seek public help to find the children.
James Cook University academic and social worker Beth Tinning, who provided court support as a volunteer to Cassie Watter during Family Court proceedings over the past two years, said Mrs Watter appeared to be a capable and devoted mother.
