The Children's Charter of Rights

  • "You have the right to have contact with your family and community." - Doesn't say how often and doesn't say how or which community became the child's at which point or after how long.

  • "You have the right to be told why you are in care and keep a record of your time in care." - Doesn't say you have the right to be told this by anyone outside the department or if the whole story gets told. And they can keep their own record?

  • "You have the right to ask for any information that is being kept about you, to read your file and add information to your file."  - You've seen these files.. they're rampant with black markers. Doesn't say "all info".  Doesn't say they'll keep was what added.
  • "You have the right to be treated fairly." - What is "fair"?  Who decides what is fair?

  • "You have the right to be treated with respect." - Whose definition of respect?

  • "You have the right to ask for extra help with your education." - Yep they can "ask".

  • "You have the right to feel safe and not be abused." - Define safe? Strangely written sentence.

  • "You have the right to complain." - This one.. this is the highlight of the joke on foster children isn't it. Yes complain, no one has to listen or act on any complaint they might hear.

  • "You have the right to services that promote your health and wellbeing." - Unless they wont pay for it.

  • "You have the right to say what you are thinking and feeling." - But just whisper it in an empty room.

  • "You have the right to take part in important decisions affecting your life." - Nothing you say will be acted upon but absolutley you could possible fill a seat at a caseplan meeting.

  • "You have the right to your own beliefs and way of live." - But no you can't go live with who you want, go to the school you were at, eat what you want or do anything foster agency or foster parents don't want you to.

  • "You have the right to make choices about everyday matters." - See above.

  • "You have the right to go to court, you have the right to be helped and supported." - Only if someone tells them there is court.

  • "You have the right to do things that you enjoy." - This is just plain stupid.

  • "Before leaving care you have the right to be involved in planning and the kind of support and assistance you may need after leaving care." - Again you have the "right" to be there and say stuff.
