A FORMER Australian Federal Police officer who downloaded child pornography because he was lonely has been spared jail.

Andrew Peisley, 63, had pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing child pornography at his Noarlunga Downs home during September and October last year.

In sentencing today, District Court Judge Rosemary Davey said she was conflicted on the appropriate sentence to give Peisley, because of his past achievements with the Federal Police and the army.

“You have a history of being a hardworking member of the community,” Judge Davey said.

“On the other hand, your crimes are serious.

“I note that children do not get abused like they do in the photographs without people like you (downloading them).

“You are the cause.”

She said Peisley was also a volunteer worker for the Cancer Foundation and conducted bushwalking tours.

Judge Davey said he was lured into downloading child pornography by pop-ups that flashed on his computer.

She said Peisley, who has post-traumatic stress from armed service in the Vietnam War, became lonely after a failed attempt to reconcile his marriage.

Judge Davey suspended Peisley’s 15-month jail term but warned him not to break her “confidence” in him not reoffending.

“If you find anything that starts to head you down the wrong track, then for heaven’s sake get some help,” she said.

Peisley agreed to sign a three-year good behaviour bond before he was allowed to leave the court
