Former Waukesha County juvenile social worker indicted for possession and distribution of child pornography

A former juvenile social worker for the Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services has been indicted on suspicion of possession and distribution of child pornography.

A federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment against Bernard J. Trokan, 53, of Hartland on July 23, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Trokan faces charges in the Eastern District of Wisconsin alleging he possessed and distributed child pornography, the release said.

If convicted of all of the charges, Trokan will serve a mandatory five years in federal prison and could face up to 20 years in prison.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation-Child Exploitation Task Force and the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department.

According to a criminal complaint filed earlier this year, investigators determined Trokan was a member of online groups involved in the distribution of child pornography and shared numerous pictures and videos of prepubescent children being sexually abused by adults.

The FBI later discovered at least three videos depicting child pornography on Trokan's phone, which investigators reviewed under a search warrant.

The FBI announced Trokan's arrest May 30, which was also the day he was placed on unpaid leave, according to a Waukesha County spokesperson.

Trokan worked as a full-time social worker in the adolescent and family services division since August 2002.

An arraignment and plea hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 7 in Milwaukee federal court.
