AURORA, Ind. (WKRC) - A Dearborn County, Indiana, couple spent the weekend in jail after being charged with several counts related to the abuse of foster children in their care.
Diane Combs and her husband, Timothy, face several charges including aggravated battery, domestic battery and battery on a child. Diane is also charged with strangulation, sexual battery and battery by bodily waste.
Neighbors said they had seen Dearborn County sheriff's deputies at the Combses' home, but they thought the visit might be related to an annual checkup for their foster children.
"It would be hard for something to shock me, but it is kind of surprising," said Bryan Fields, whose mother lives across the street. "It's been a week or two ago. We did see a deputy sheriff car, police over there, and then I think I seen one not too long after that."
The Combses were booked into the Dearborn County Jail Friday morning. Neighbors said they had seen four to five children in the Combses' yard and they believed Diane also babysat children.
"They used to have ... like, a little school bus that they used to transport the kids in. Haven't seen it much and we haven't see [the] kids. No school buses stopping to pick the kids up. That's probably been in the last week or two," Fields said.
According to an affidavit filed in support of the charges, Diane and Timothy were videotaped slapping and kicking some of the younger children. The affidavit states a video shows Diane putting a wet Pull-Up in the mouth of a 6-year-old after the child had wet his pants. The child was then knocked to the ground. Other acts of abuse are also contained in the affidavit.
The court documents state the Combses refused to talk to detectives. They had four foster children, one adopted child and three children they were babysitting when detectives went to their home in late July. The children were removed from the home.
Diane and Timothy will appear in court Tuesday morning.
"This will be the shocking story of the month for this road, I would say," Fields said.
